See how his Callaway clubs helped Phil Mickleson win the Open

What’s the first word that comes to your mind when you think of Phil Mickelson ’s final round 66 on Sunday? Is it legendary? Unforgettable? Inspiring?

Whatever you want to call it, this will go down as one of the best final round performances in major championship history, and now to paraphrase from the man himself, Phil can proudly call himself The 2013 Champion Golfer of The Year!
Mickelson closed in on the win with a back nine for the ages that included four birdies over his final six holes. In one of the biggest moments of the tournament, the now five-time major winner trusted an X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood (13°, Fubuki K 70x shaft) to get on in two for a clutch birdie at the par-5 17th that helped seal the win, highlighted by his second shot from 308 yards into the wind!
Of the two shots he hit with X Hot 3Deep on the 17th, Mickelson said, “I hit two of the best 3-woods I’ve ever hit.” Earlier in the week, he told reporters, “This 3-wood has changed my game.”
On the 72nd hole, Lefty drained a slick downhill birdie putt to cap off a brilliant putting performance with his Odyssey Versa #9 White Putter . He rolled in huge birdie putts on the 13th and 14th greens as well to go along with his short birdie on the 17th, and after the round he said, “This is the best I’ve ever putted.”
Phil’s Versa is 34” with a black putter shaft, and Odyssey Principal Designer Austie Rollinson bent a lot of offset into the putter because Phil claims the head sets up better for him with a lot of offset.
In addition to the X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood and Versa Putter, Phil trusted a HEX Chrome+ Ball , the new Mack Daddy 2 Wedges (60° prototype, 64°) and X Forged Irons (4-PW, KBS Tour V2 Shafts).
Phil has commented that he likes the CG positioning in X Forged Irons and how straight they fly. These irons feature CG Height progression, which puts the center of gravity lower in the long irons for a higher trajectory and places the CG higher in the short irons for a flatter trajectory.
And after giving a winning wedgeducation at the Scottish Open with Mack Daddy 2, Mickelson appears to be completely dialed in with his clubs, to say the least.
With his win on Sunday, Phil earned back-to-back wins the last two weeks, his third worldwide win this year, and moved up to No. 2 in the world golf rankings. Already a hall of famer and a legend before his win on Sunday, he’s now won five majors, 42 career PGA Tour events, and three of the four majors for the career grand slam.
Of course, he did it all with the typical class we’ve come to expect from him, and in another touching moment he celebrated the win with his family and his longtime caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay just off the 18th green.
Callaway are proud to call Phil the 2013 Champion Golfer of The Year! And they couldn’t have asked for a better way for him to do it in a spectacular finish. Congratulations Phil
What was in Phil’s bag at the Open
Just as he did at Merion during the US Open, Phil Mickelson opted to not carry a driver at Muirfield, using a 13-degree Callaway X Hot 3Deep fairway wood as his longest club in the bag. The strategy paid off as he used the club twice on Muirfield’s 17th to reach the par 5 in two. At the other end of his bag, the left-hander carried five wedges, including Callaway’s new Mack Daddy 2.
His full bag included:
Fairway wood: Callaway X Hot 3Deep (Mitsubishi Fubuki K 70X), 13 degrees
